Prof. Li Tiecheng on TV interview to advise the Canton Fair on ways to new breakthroughs

On April 23, Prof. Li Tiecheng from the School of Management, who is also head of the research team of integrated innovation for convention and exhibition, was invited by Guangdong Economics, Science and Education Channel's program “Financial Viewpoints to share his views on how the Canton Fair achieves high quality development.

It is reported that the 133rd Canton Fair, the first held after China reopened, is the largest offline trade fair, hitting a record high in terms of exhibition area and the number of exhibitors. Many exhibitors who showcased high-quality products to visiting businessmen from home and abroad received more orders than expected. According to Professor Li in the interview, this year's Canton Fair is particularly attracting to businesses because of the unprecedented scale, the openness to both overseas and domestic buyers, and the hunger of enterprises after the reopen. He believed that the vitality of the Canton Fair lies in its ability to keep up with the times and develop through innovation.

As foreign demand declines, enterprises are competing for less orders in overseas markets. Therefore, the Canton Fair saw a decline of overseas buyers. To break such a predicament, Professor Li advised that the Canton Fair should attach greater importance and work to improve four relationships. First, the relationship between the supply side and the demand side. When the demand for booths exceeds supply, it should come up with an effective way to balance the relationship between large enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises. Second, the relationship between scale and quality. While a focus on the scale is important, it should also take a differentiation strategy to create boutique or brand exhibition zones. Third, the relationship between imports and exports. It should consider whether the surge in the number of domestic buyers would affect the purchasing experience of foreign buyers and take measures accordingly. Fourth, the relationship between online exhibition and offline exhibition. It should take advantage of online exhibition to improve customer royalty and turnover rate. He said that the most important thing for the Canton Fair to continue quality development is to reform and innovate so that it can become more high-tech and provide better services.
